During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, testing laboratories were inundated with samples requiring rapid turnaround times. Recognizing the need for optimal testing instrument performance, PerkinElmer initiated the PKeye Mobile Operations project as a technical proof of concept. The objective was to determine if cameras monitoring PerkinElmer instruments could effectively communicate with lab technicians via email and SMS in real-time when faults occurred during testing runs.
What started out as technical POC became a robust application. Testing instruments equipped with PKeye demonstrated a fourfold reduction in remedy time when encountering faults. The PKeye software effectively tracked common errors and provided targeted training suggestions to prevent instrument faults altogether.
Laboratories utilizing PKeye software efficiently monitored consumable usage and automated supply ordering when inventory levels were low. Additionally, lab managers were able to remotely access instrument status and turnaround times for faults and sampling, significantly enhancing operational oversight.
PerkinElmer, Inc. is a global company that focuses on the development and provision of products, services, and solutions for the diagnostics, life sciences, and applied markets. Founded in 1937, the company has been a significant player in scientific advancements, particularly in areas such as environmental health, food safety, and human and animal health.
PerkinElmer rebranded its life sciences and diagnostics business as Revvity in May 2023, following the sale of its applied science, food, and enterprise services divisions to New Mountain Capital in 2022.
Our proof of concept (POC) effectively allowed for testing instruments to use the PKeye to send text and email notifications, accompanied by a video, to lab staff in the event of an instrument testing fault.
A select group was identified for beta testing and user research using the PKeye POC. Due to heightened safety precautions, beta testers were asked to maintain experience diaries. These diary studies revealed recurring themes among users, providing valuable insights into user goals.
Our initial findings from the PKeye POC user research enabled us to communicate opportunities to PerkinElmer. PerkinElmer had a clear vision for PKeye: to enhance laboratory efficiency. By aligning this vision with our user insights, we defined three business objectives. Utilizing existing metrics, we established baselines for key results supporting out business objectives and collaborated with PerkinElmer to determine the degree of improvement needed—categorized as "minimal," "moderate," and "significant." We then identified metrics suitable for each key result. Each objective was documented in a one-page summary, detailing key results and projected product phase.
Given the urgency and unique challenges posed by the pandemic, we sought methods for user research that were both remote and conducted outside of users' time on the lab floor. Focusing on our objectives, we conducted contextual interviews and surveys with laboratory professionals.
Key insights included:
We proposed a Future State Blueprint that addressed the necessary infrastructure to tackle key insights collected:
Upon PerkinElmer's approval of the Future State Blueprint, the development team initiated technical spike work while the experience team focused on solutioning additional key insights .
Collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs) and leveraging data collected during user research, we designed and tested desktop and mobile prototypes with Lab Technicians and Lab Managers to provide solutions for:
Prototype testing results were evaluated using Single Usability Metrics and assessed against key results related to applicable objectives. In instances where progress indicated that key results might not be achieved within six months post-MVP release, concepts were iterated and retested to achieve more favorable outcomes. Features proposed were then compiled into a backlog.
With an understanding of our key results' progress, we collaborated with the PerkinElmer team to scope the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) against their desired release date. During this session, we prioritized features based on user needs and their impact on lab efficiency, placing the most critical items at the top of the backlog. Our plan for the MVP was estimated at 14 sprints, encompassing both an implementation track and discovery for the next phase.
Following a successful MVP launch, PKeye garnered sufficient market traction to warrant a phase 2 of implementation with a reduced discovery track. We continued our partnership with PerkinElmer on PKeye until their acquisition by Revvity.

Set of Overarching Goals
Diary studies conducted with the Beta testing group for the PKeye proof of concept (POC) uncovered a series of recurring pain points. These pain points were categorized by theme and translated into overarching goals, which were then paired with potential opportunities for improvement.
